아니요. 강함일지도 모릅니다.
침묵하지 않고 감정을 마주할 수 있는 강함.

하지만 이토록 간절하게 성장하려 애쓰는 캐릭터는 드뭅니다.

To Feel Loudly in a Quiet World
Let’s admit it plainly: Lucian is emotional.
Sometimes he’s explosive. Sometimes quiet.
But almost always sharp-edged—and undeniably, overwhelmingly human. His reactions are excessive. Rude. Destructive. This we know.
But OUTLIER never portrays Lucian’s volatility as a “flawed personality quirk” for shock value.
It’s emotional realism—built on real trauma responses, born from a deep history of unmet emotional needs and a lifetime of feeling unlovable.
He craves love, but he’s terrified of letting others in.
That contradiction touches everything he does.
Western viewers often resonate with him, seeing Lucian as “emotionally honest.” But for Korean viewers, his behavior may feel a bit unfamiliar, uncomfortable... or even flat-out inappropriate.
This story challenges the idea that "emotional suppression equals maturity." Pain doesn’t disappear just because we ignore it.
The desire to be loved doesn’t fade simply because we hide it.
OUTLIER doesn’t pathologize emotion.
It sees it as a path to healing—and a starting point for growth.
In many ways, I believe this story could only be told by a Korean-American creator... because it takes someone who knows what it means to feel the cultural shame of even bringing up such a topic... and still have the boldness to do it anyway.
This story asks us to reconsider the belief that emotion is weakness and, instead, consider that maybe it could be our strength.
Strength to process feelings without silence.
Strength to ask for help without reservation.
Strength to hold ourselves accountable without ego.
Lucian Oren Lacer is not perfect.
But few characters ever fight this hard to actually grow.
So if there’s one thing to take from the series, it’s this:
Showing messy emotions is not shameful.
Having a beautiful soul is not emasculate.
Feeling broken does not mean you’re doomed to stay that way.

판타지 장르의 가장 큰 아름다움 중 하나는, 반드시 논리에 따라야 할 필요가 없다는 점입니다. 이야기는 상상력과 진정성이 자유롭게 흐를 때 가장 깊게 자랍니다.
이 작품을 통해 저는 기존의 판타지 구조를 한국적인 시선으로 재해석하고자 했습니다. 그 언어, 건축, 그리고 사회적 관습들을 통해서요.
엘프 왕국 '카시우스'는 한국적 미학에 깊이 뿌리내리고 있지만, 이야기의 서사 구조는 서양 판타지의 리듬과 미국식 내러티브 감성 위에서 전개됩니다.
다만 분명히 말씀드리고 싶은 것은, 이러한 문화적 찬사는, 카시우스의 억압적이고 냉혹한 사회 구조와는 본질적으로 다릅니다.
그 억압적인 구조는 실제 한국 사회를 반영하거나 비판하기 위함이 아닙니다. 이는 캐릭터들의 시각을 흔들고, 성찰을 유도하며, 이념이 개인에게 어떤 영향을 미치는지를 탐구하기 위한 서사 장치로 설정된 것입니다.
그 이유는 제가 한국계 미국인 창작자이기 때문입니다. 저의 정체성은 동양의 깊은 전통성과 서양의 자기성찰적인 이야기 구조, 그 두 문화를 모두 경험하며 형성되어 왔습니다. 혼혈 창작자로서, 저는 그 융합의 직접적인 결과물이라 자부합니다.
프랑스, 미국, 일본은 오래전부터 다양한 문화와 장르를 넘나드는 창작의 자유를 활발히 받아들여 왔습니다.
OUTLIER를 통해 저는 한국도 그 흐름에 충분히 동참할 수 있다는 것을 보여주고 싶었습니다. 한국적 색채를 지닌 이야기가 굳이 하나의 문화적 시선 안에만 머물 필요는 없습니다.
그 영혼을 잃지 않으면서도, 세계와 소통할 수 있습니다.
때로 그 정신은, 잔혹한 디스토피아 속에서 감정을 날것으로 분출하는 인물들을 통해 강렬하게 드러나고... 또 어떤 순간에는 문신을 지닌, 뾰족한 갈색 머리의 주인공처럼 섬세한 시각적 선택 속에 조용히 숨어 있습니다. (절대 금기죠!)
핵심은 이것입니다 : 익숙한 틀에서 벗어날 용기.
우리는 너무 자주 안전한 공식을 고수합니다. 하지만 그 바깥에는, 깊이 울리고, 공감되고, 신선하게 다가오는 이야기들이 기다리고 있습니다. OUTLIER는 그 경계를 조심스럽게 넘는, 아주 작은 한 걸음입니다.

Spoken in Korean, Rooted in Fantasy
Many people ask: “Elves usually come from European mythology. Why are they speaking Korean in OUTLIER?”
One of the greatest beauties of fantasy is that it doesn’t need to follow strict logic. It grows best when nurtured by unrestrained imagination and sincerity.
Through this story, I wanted to reinterpret traditional fantasy structures through a Korean lens—its language, its architecture, and its social rituals. The Elven kingdom of Cassian is deeply rooted in Korean aesthetics. But the story itself flows with the rhythm of Western fantasy and American narrative energy.
That said, it’s important to note that this cultural celebration is distinct from the harsh, dystopian nature of Cassian society itself.
Its oppressive structure is not meant to reflect or criticize Korea.
Rather, it functions as a narrative device—a heightened system designed to challenge characters, provoke self-reflection, and explore the consequences of inherited belief.
That’s because, as a Korean-American creator, my identity is shaped by both the richness of Eastern tradition and the introspection of Western storytelling. As a mixed-heritage writer, I am ultimately a direct reflection of that blend.
France, America, and Japan have long embraced creative freedom across cultures and genres. With OUTLIER, I simply wanted to show that Korea can too.
Korean-coded stories don’t need to be confined to a single cultural lens. They can speak to the world—without losing their soul.
Sometimes that spirit is expressed boldly; through raw and emotional characters living in an cruel, dystopian world. Other times, it’s found in subtler visual choices... like a spiky brown-haired protagonist with tattoos. Absolute sacrilege!
The point is: it takes courage to step outside the box.
Too often, we stay within the comfort of familiar formulas. But just beyond those lines are ideas that can be deeply moving, resonant, and refreshingly new. OUTLIER is just one small step past that boundary.
And while it may feel unfamiliar at first, I hope you’ll see it for what it truly is: A story rooted in pride—and love—for embracing what makes us different.
