To Feel Loudly in a Quiet World
Let’s admit it plainly: Lucian is emotional.
Sometimes he’s explosive. Sometimes quiet.
But almost always sharp-edged—and undeniably, overwhelmingly human. His reactions are excessive. Rude. Destructive. This we know.
But OUTLIER never portrays Lucian’s volatility as a “flawed personality quirk” for shock value.
It’s emotional realism—built on real trauma responses, born from a deep history of unmet emotional needs and a lifetime of feeling unlovable.
He craves love, but he’s terrified of letting others in.
That contradiction touches everything he does.
Western viewers often resonate with him, seeing Lucian as “emotionally honest.” But for Korean viewers, his behavior may feel a bit unfamiliar, uncomfortable... or even flat-out inappropriate.
This story challenges the idea that "emotional suppression equals maturity." Pain doesn’t disappear just because we ignore it.
The desire to be loved doesn’t fade simply because we hide it.
OUTLIER doesn’t pathologize emotion.
It sees it as a path to healing—and a starting point for growth.
In many ways, I believe this story could only be told by a Korean-American creator... because it takes someone who knows what it means to feel the cultural shame of even bringing up such a topic... and still have the boldness to do it anyway.
This story asks us to reconsider the belief that emotion is weakness and, instead, consider that maybe it could be our strength.
Strength to process feelings without silence.
Strength to ask for help without reservation.
Strength to hold ourselves accountable without ego.
Lucian Oren Lacer is not perfect.
But few characters ever fight this hard to actually grow.
So if there’s one thing to take from the series, it’s this:
Showing messy emotions is not shameful.
Having a beautiful soul is not emasculate.
Feeling broken does not mean you’re doomed to stay that way.

Why Do the Elves in OUTLIER Speak Korean?
It’s one of the most common questions we receive, and one we love to answer. Because in OUTLIER, Korean isn’t just a language.
It’s the voice of a mother who was erased... and the sound of a son trying not to forget her.
Yes. The Elves are Korean-coded in language, architecture, cultural ritual, and emotional cadence.
But let’s be clear: Cassius is not "Fantasy Korea".
It’s a dystopian regime where Common (English) is enforced and Elvish (Korean) is forbidden—specifically to suppress knowledge of ancient Runic Elvish, a magical language of power and rebellion.
As OUTLIER Season 1 Episode 13’s title describes it best:
“Breed Ignorance, Silence the Rest.”
This is not a story where Korean-coded = villainous.
This is a story where Korean-coded = sacred... and stolen.
Language as Character
Lucian is fluent in many tongues, but none are spoken without purpose. His multilingual skills are not written for controversy or clout. It’s the backbone of one of OUTLIER’s most powerful themes.
Lucian doesn’t fall into Elvish because it’s considered bold or edgy... He falls into it because it was the last language he shared with his mother.
Because when you're raised in a realm that silences culture, clinging to it becomes the only way to stay whole.

In today’s landscape, where people sometimes reach for offense before context, we’re choosing to lead with transparency. Not because we expect backlash, but because we refuse to let a story rooted in love, identity, and emotional truth be misread before it’s experienced.
Who is Lucian Oren Lacer?
Lucian is not Korean. He is Korean-coded.
He is a fantasy character in the form of an Elf who was raised in a kingdom inspired by Korean societal structure, linguistic rhythm, and emotional nuance.
Lucian is also BPD & C-PTSD-coded.
His behavior reflects the spirals, dysregulation, and self-destructive intensity that many neurodivergent people recognize... but he was not created as a clinical case study.
While his journey does challenge stigmas, spotlight trauma, and offer emotional resonance—his overall purpose is not to force-feed a message. Lucian's story exists so audiences can feel with him (and grow alongside him) as a natural byproduct of narrative depth done right.
Who voices him?
Lucian is emotionally performed in English for over 90% of the series.
As such, we needed a voice actor who could bring:

The actor who stepped into that role wasn't a professional who tried to "become" Korean. He came in to honor what Korean means to Lucian’s grief, identity, and fractured inner world.
What does thoughtful casting look like?
If fantasy representation required an exact match of every coded trait, then casting Lucian would require:

A Korean actor by ethnicity and citizenship that is fluent in Korean—and six additional languages

Diagnosed with a mental illness to accurately relate, not just perform... yet still be capable of handling the high emotional toll of the role

Trained in Western-style performance nuance & bold comedic timing

Comfortable working on a non-union project

Available for months of linguistic, emotional, and cultural prep

Have excellent chemistry with the rest of the main cast & bounce off their performances naturally

At that point, we wouldn’t be casting a voice actor.
We’d be hunting for a unicorn.
At some point the audience must realize, its not about checking off every box... its about living with the ones you realistically can't, and being happy with the ones you ambitiously can.
So how did we do it — respectfully?
First off, OUTLIER was not created by someone outside of the culture. This series was created by a multilingual Korean-American writer & animator.
OUTLIER isn't a story that borrowed pain for flavor. It was born from real-life personal experience, then ushered forward with meaningful purpose.
And although Studio Kane is a Korean-American animation company, it is ultimately an independent studio with limited resources... Yet, we still prioritized:

Hiring native consultants (for all languages featured in the series)

Ensuring cultural and phonetic accuracy

Integrating real-time feedback during table reads to guide pronunciation and intention

Directing with care, consistency, and embodiment—even when it meant going the expensive extra mile
The takeaway?
Ethnicity absolutely matters in casting.
It should always be a first consideration.
But sometimes, ethnicity alone is not enough to represent a character’s full narrative complexity.
Representation in fantasy means telling stories that feel emotionally true, even when the worlds they live in aren’t. And sometimes, the most powerful form of representation is a team willing to put in the hard work to get it right.
Because, at the end of the day, the point of a voice actor is to embody the character. Not for the character to be confined by the actor.
In OUTLIER, that embodiment was well-earned.
And we’re very proud of the result.

The Fae speak Puerto Rican Spanish, infused with the warmth and musicality of the Caribbean. The Boor are a vibrant fusion of Japanese honor and African passion—expressed through bold cadence and deep familial bonds.
The Mescalahns? Fierce, brave, and distinctly Slavic.
The Dwarves? Rooted in mystical Celtic tradition.
The Anemoi? Loud, blunt, and undeniably American.
This diversity isn’t just worldbuilding. It’s the heartbeat of OUTLIER. It’s also what fuels Lucian’s unwavering respect for other nations and their ways of life.
To redub each race into a single, localized language would be to flatten the very message of the story. It would erase cultural nuance, emotional texture, and the authenticity of each voice.
In a narrative where Lucian boldly champions empathy and cross-cultural understanding, a one-size-fits-all dub would feel utterly tone-deaf.
As a Korean-Puerto Rican American born and raised in Houston, Texas—an embodiment of many identities blended together—I’ve learned one important truth:
The world does not belong to any one culture.
Yes, OUTLIER proudly honors Korean nuance.
But it also unapologetically celebrates Latino soul, African fire, Japanese tradition, European folklore, and so much more.
It's difficult to say this is strictly a "Korean animation” or an "American story"... because in reality, OUTLIER was never meant to be told by just one voice.
